Oral Cancer Awareness

This week we are going to take a small break from our Invisalign series to acknowledge Oral Cancer Awareness Month.

The month of April is an especially important month to encourage all dental professionals to conduct oral head and neck cancer screenings. At Pearl Dental NYC an oral cancer exam is performed at every scheduled exam and cleaning. We take pride in ensuring all of our patients are monitored and educated on their potential oral cancer risks.

So, what puts you at risk for getting oral cancer?

Like most cancers, age is a common risk factor. Most cases are seen in people over 40 years of age, but oral cancer can occur at any age, and there has been an increase in cases in younger populations. According to The American Academy of Oral Medicine, tobacco and alcohol use are the most common risk factors, with greater risk in tobacco users who also consume alcohol. The sexually transmitted disease, human papillomavirus 16 (HPV) is related to the increase in cases affecting nonsmokers under the age of 40. People with HPV are 30 times more likely to develop oral cancer.

Oral cancer often strikes in the mouth with most cancers located on the surfaces of the tongue, mouth, and lips. Other head and neck cancers commonly manifest in the throat and behind the ears.

It is always important to schedule regular appointments with your Pearl Dental provider to maintain overall oral health!
