April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month!

Oral and oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the mouth and throat) kills one
person every hour of every day. In the United States, approximately 50,000
people will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer this year, with 132 new
cases diagnosed every day.

So what puts you at risk for getting oral cancer?

Like most cancers, age is a common risk factor. Most cases are seen in
people over 40 years of age, but oral cancer can occur at any age, and
there has been an increase in cases in younger populations.

According to The American Academy of Oral Medicine, tobacco and alcohol use
are the most common risk factors, with greater risk in tobacco users who
also consume alcohol.

The sexually transmitted disease, human papillomavirus 16 (HPV) is related
to the increase in cases affecting nonsmokers under the age of 40. People
with HPV are 30 times more likely to develop oral cancer.

As April is coming to an end, be sure to schedule your next cleaning and
exam at Pearl Dental NYC, where all our doctors and hygienists are
